A video surfaced this week that showed members of the University of Oklahoma’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (also known as SAE) engaging in a chant that contained racially offensive lyrics. The lyrics are as follows:
“There will never be a nigger SAE. You can hang them from a tree, but they will never sign with me. There will never be a nigger SAE.”
The actions of the members that participated in singing this chant are unfortunate. They should be held accountable along with anyone within the SAE organization that influenced or encouraged their behavior. That said, it is important to remember that these are impressionable teenage boys. Teenagers exhibiting poor judgment is not new.
However, even honest mistakes have consequences. The potential implications of the actions of the members of SAE are worth careful consideration.
Fraternities offer their members a range of benefits. College students can access a professional network of alumni when they graduate. SAE is one of the largest North American Greek-letter social college fraternities. Its alumni members occupy fields that include media, business, finance, education, and government.

Cancer is most harmful when it is allowed to develop unchallenged.
