I Hope that Sandra Bland Killed Herself

Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old black woman, was found dead in a cell in Waller County, Texas on July 13th. Authorities say that Bland hung herself using a plastic trash can liner. Bland was arrested and jailed after a routine traffic stop for a minor violation escalated into Bland reportedly assaulting Texas State Trooper Brian Encinia.

Critics dispute the cause of Bland’s death. Thus far, it appears that the evidence supports the original report.

According to a report by The New York Times, “A county prosecutor in Texas said Thursday that an autopsy of Sandra Bland, who died in a jail cell here nearly two weeks ago after a minor traffic stop, concluded that her injuries were consistent with suicide, not homicide, a finding that underscored growing doubts that the jail did enough to monitor her.”

The New York Times also noted that “examiners also found scars and scabs from about 30 cuts on Ms. Bland’s left forearm, which they said had probably occurred two to four weeks ago.”

This raises questions about Bland’s mental condition. That certainly seems relevant. However, an investigation into Bland’s mental history ought to be coupled with an inquiry into Texas State Trooper Encinia’s background as a law enforcement officer. That seems relevant, too.

I am a person of color. Because of that, some may assume that I welcome any narrative that casts aspersions on police officers. Sandra Bland is dead. As unfortunate as that is, the question becomes how did she die? While I doubt the legitimacy of Bland’s arrest, and I am suspicious of the account offered by authorities, I hope that she killed herself. The implications of the alternative are bone-chilling. It would mean murder. It would mean an attempted cover-up by a police department, medical examiners, and Waller County’s assistant district attorney, Warren Diepraam. It would mean that a level of wickedness exists in our justice system that leaves me feeling fearful for my children’s lives. I would rather that not be the case.
